The Sound of a Legacy

Cathy Dickey’s gift ushers in a new era for the Sun Devil Marching Band

On the final game day of the 2025 football season, as the desert sun settled over Mountain America Stadium and anticipation filled the air, thousands of Sun Devil fans watched a familiar tradition take its place on the field.

The Arizona State University Sun Devil Marching Band assembled in its pregame block. Brass instruments caught the light. Drums pulsed with energy. The stadium buzzed with the unmistakable electricity that only the band can create.

But on this day, something felt different.

As the band stepped forward, a brilliant shimmer of gold swept across the field. The lines were crisp. The sunburst radiated with renewed brilliance. The entire formation seemed to glow with a sense of pride, both timeless and new.

What fans witnessed in that moment was far more than the debut of a new uniform.

It was the continuation and evolution of a legacy.

All of it was made possible through the extraordinary generosity of Cathy Dickey.

“Cathy’s generosity ensures that the tradition and energy of the Sun Devil Marching Band will continue to thrive for years to come,” Sun Devil Marching Band director James Hudson said. “The band is such an essential part of the Arizona State experience. It sets the tone for game day, connects generations of Sun Devils, and represents the spirit of this university in such a powerful way.”

Her gift arrived at exactly the right time for the Sun Devil Marching Band. For nearly two decades, generations of student musicians had proudly represented Arizona State in uniforms that had long surpassed their expected lifespan. The garments had carried the sound and spirit of Sun Devil pride through countless performances, bowl games, rivalry battles, and unforgettable moments. But like the instruments and equipment that accompany a marching band season after season, time had taken its toll.

Still, the band marched on.

Once again, however, the Dickey family answered the call.

Cathy Dickey’s generosity continues a remarkable thread of commitment first woven by her late husband, Verde Dickey, whose passion for Arizona State Athletics left a lasting imprint on the university. Late in his lifetime, Verde made a transformative investment that provided the Sun Devil Marching Band with new uniforms and instruments, elevating the program to new heights and enriching the game day experience for generations of fans.

Thousands of student musicians marched in those uniforms. Millions of fans felt their impact in the stands.

What began as a gift became part of Sun Devil history.

Even the design itself has become a piece of Sun Devil lore.

Nearly twenty years ago, Verde Dickey, Sun Devil Marching Band director James G. Hudson, and legendary uniform designer Michael Cesario gathered at the former ASU Karsten Golf Course to imagine a new visual identity for the band. During their conversation, Cesario noticed a nearby water tower emblazoned with a bold sunburst. Inspired in the moment, he began sketching on a napkin.

That spontaneous sketch would become the foundation for one of the most recognizable marching band uniforms in collegiate athletics.

At the time, the design was revolutionary. It incorporated innovative fabric printing techniques rarely seen in marching band attire and introduced a visual identity that immediately stood apart. The result was a uniform that captured the bold spirit of Arizona State while creating a powerful presence on the field.

Nearly two decades later, that vision has been reborn.

Once again designed by Michael Cesario and produced by Fred J. Miller, the same company responsible for the original, this new uniform honors the tradition that fans remember while embracing the possibilities of modern design.

Advanced performance fabrics, modern construction, and improved mobility allow the uniform to meet the demands of today’s student performers. Thoughtful innovations ensure comfort in the intense Arizona heat while maintaining the powerful visual identity that Sun Devil fans have come to expect.

In fact, the uniform was designed with four interchangeable configurations, allowing the band to adapt its look throughout the season. Early-season performances can feature a lighter configuration that reduces bulk and improves mobility during Tempe’s warmest game days. As the season progresses and temperatures cool, additional elements create a layered and commanding appearance that fills the field with striking visual energy.

It is a design built not only for performance, but for the unique environment of Arizona State.

And above all, it is a design built for the students.

Every year, hundreds of student musicians commit themselves to the discipline, artistry, and teamwork required to represent Arizona State University through music. Long rehearsals under the Arizona sun, countless hours perfecting formations, and the responsibility of carrying the sound that fuels game day energy are all part of the experience.

The Sun Devil Marching Band is more than a halftime performance.

It is the heartbeat of the stadium.

It is the sound that welcomes the team onto the field, lifts the crowd during critical moments, and sends waves of pride through generations of Sun Devils watching from the stands.

Cathy Dickey’s generous gift ensures that the students who carry that responsibility will do so with the same pride and presence that have defined the program for decades.

While the debut of the uniform drew attention across Sun Devil Nation, the deeper significance of the moment goes far beyond fabric and design.

It is about stewardship.

It is about honoring the past while investing in the future.

Above all, it is about the enduring belief that the traditions which define Arizona State must continue to evolve so that new generations of Sun Devils can experience them in their fullest form.

Cathy Dickey’s leadership ensures that the Sun Devil Marching Band will continue to inspire pride, amplify the energy of the crowd, and elevate the game day experience for years to come.

Her generosity also serves as a powerful reminder that the strength of Sun Devil Athletics has always been rooted in community. When supporters invest in the people and traditions that make this university special, the impact resonates far beyond a single season.

“Cathy’s leadership and commitment to honoring Verde’s legacy have given our students something truly special,” Hudson added. “We are incredibly grateful for the lasting impact she continues to make on this program.”

Through the Unleash the Sound campaign, the Sun Devil community has an opportunity to build upon the foundation that Cathy has helped establish. Her extraordinary gift marks the beginning of a new chapter for the band and invites others who share her passion for Arizona State to help ensure that the sound of Sun Devil pride continues to grow.

Band Smile

Because when the band steps onto the field, they do more than perform.

They carry history.

They represent the university.

On that final game day of 2025, when the band’s gold shimmered under the desert sky and the sunburst radiated across the field once more, one truth stood above all others:

The legacy of the Dickey family still leads the formation.
