As summer begins, we look back on another athletic and academic season for Sun Devil Athletics. 2021-22 was chalked full of ups and downs, but ended rather fittingly, with our student-athletes laying it all out there and giving their all for the maroon & gold.
The spring postseason saw our Softball team host and win a regional before coming up one game short in the superregionals. The support at Club Farrington was tremendous, as it was all season, and carried the team to one of the best campaigns in recent history.
While still in relative infancy, the Sun Devil Women’s Lacrosse program also mad a splash this spring, coming up agonizingly close to its first postseason bid after knocking off Cal and USC before ultimately falling to Stanford in the Pac-12 tournament, hosted in Tempe.
Both golf programs recorded respectively strong showings in the postseason as well. With both NCAA Championships hosted at Grayhawk in Scottsdale, the men’s and women’s programs gave the home fans plenty to cheer about as the ladies finished ninth, just outside of match play qualifications and the men finished second. It was a fantastic run by Coach Thurmond’s team, beating the top-ranked Oklahoma Sooners and the reigning champion Pepperdine Waves before falling to the Texas Longhorns in the championship match.
The spring season came to a close just last week as the Track & Field teams competed at the NCAA Championships where Jorinde van Kinken earned yet another discus title and the women's team placed eighth. On the men's side, Turner Washington took second and two freshman, Dayton Carlson and Ralford Mullings landed on the podium.
So much excitement and so much to be proud of, and all here in the valley. This is part of what makes Sun Devil Athletics so special, the ability to constantly compete at the highest level, and the ability to do so in front of the best fans in the country with so many events hosted in the area.
Sun Devil student-athletes gave it their all this season and will be sure to do it again come this fall, and we can’t wait to be part of another exciting journey, we’ll see you there.
